Squirrels are not appreciated by many homeowners and garden enthusiasts.Squirrels can be protected by providing a designated area for them in your garden or birdhouse.Squirrels will stay in your area if a squirrel house is built properly.A squirrel house is used to shelter and feed the animals.
Step 1: Take your tools with you.
This is a basic project that doesn't require much more. You will need a saw, screwdriver, and screws. You can use a hammer and nails if you don't have an electric screwdriver. The squirrel house has screws that are more secure than nails.First aid kit Sandpaper, measuring tape, and pencil are things you should keep on hand.
Step 2: There are wooden boards to gather.
This project will work with scrap lumber. This material is easier to damage than exterior grade plywood. To be used as the floor, roof, and overhang, two boards should be 12” x12” or larger. You need two more 35” x 6”The average squirrel size is used to calculate the six.If you notice larger animals, use a bigger wood.If you have enough scrap wood, you don't need to follow the exact dimensions.
Step 3: The front and back panels can be created.
The roof overhang is the key to a good squirrel house. The front board should be an inch shorter than the back board. To mark 18” on one board and 17 on another board, use your measuring tape.Draw straight lines with your pen.Cut along the line with your saw.Take your time.A good cut is better than a choppy cut. These are the dimensions of the squirrel house. It is possible to make your house smaller, but not bigger.Squirrels like small spaces.
Step 4: You can create your own sidewalls.
The sides have to be the same width as the front and back panels. There is a more advanced cut required for the side panels. You will need to measure on one edge and the other edge. The plank's top will be cut in half.To mark the right measurements, use your measuring tape.Draw a line to connect the markers. To make a straight and even line, use a ruler.Use your saw to make a clean cut.You will be able to see the panels align with the walls.
Step 5: You can create a doorway.
You need to create an entrance for the squirrel.Measure three inches from the 18” side of one of the side panels. The 3” mark is used to create a hole. You are removing the pointed edge of a piece of furniture. It doesn't need to be three inches in diameter. What species can fit into the house is determined by the hole size. The opening of the squirrel house has been reported as too large.
Step 6: Attach the walls
Place the walls using your hands.Make sure the front and rear edges are in line.It is time to attach the walls once you are happy with the outline.Attach everything in the same order as the front wall.Place the side panel in front of the front panel.Attach the two with 4-7 evenly spacing nails or screws.Attach the side panel from the front wall to the back wall. The nail or screws should go through the side wall.Attach the other sideboard to the house. You should use 4-7 screws or nails for each corner.Take your time when using an electric screwdriver. If you try to work too quickly, you will damage the wood. From the back wall to the front wall there should be an even slope.
Step 7: You need to connect the flooring.
The flooring for the squirrel house should be on one of the 12” x12” boards. On top of the frame created in the previous step, position it.The wall should be aligned along the edge of the floorboard. To mark where the corners are on the floor, center the frame.Attach the nails and screws by flipping the frame.Attach screws or nails to the corners. For each side, use between 3-4 screws or nails.Attach the nails or screws with the house's frame.
Step 8: The house should be filled.
A wooden divider with a 3” gap can be used to create two stories in a house.Squirrels like to play indoors.Adding pillow fluff or a stuffed animal will make it more comfortable for the squirrel.Dry moss can be found in nature or in a craft store.Measure the inside of the house to make a floor divider. The entrance to the house was cut out with a 3” hole.Someone will help you attach the floor divider with a nail or screw. The help hands will attach the screw to the wall. There are gaps between the walls and the floor. This does not need to be as tight as the exterior structure.
Step 9: Attach the roof to the building.
The extra 12” should be used as the roof. The backside of the roof should be aligned with the edge.As you nail or screw in the roof, you will need to hold the wooden board in place. An overhang should be on the front of the house.
Step 10: Take a look at your yard.
It's a good idea to watch the squirrels in your yard for a day.Take mental notes of the trees you can see.Pick out a tree that you think will hold that house.A location that is 10 to 30 feet off the ground is ideal for squirrel activity.Squirrels are more likely to occupy a house that is higher in elevation.
Step 11: A grip is created.
You will need two large nails to hold the squirrel house.Use a ladder to get to the house. You need a partner to spot you for safety measures.Use a hammer to drive the first nail into the tree.Drive the second nail parallel to the first nail. The second nail should be left exposed.Between the two nails is where the squirrel house should fit.
Step 12: The squirrel house should be wrapped.
You can tighten the squirrel house to the tree with a thick wire.Make sure the wire you use is strong. It is possible to tie the wire together and tighten it with pliers, but this may prove dangerous at such a height. You can ask about the thick gauged wire at a hardware store. They will come up with a solution that will work.
Step 13: There is a squirrel house.
The squirrel house needs to be between the two nails. The goal is to make the nails fit the house in a snug manner. The wire from the previous step should be used to secure the squirrel house.
Step 14: Put food in it.
Squirrels are easy to find if you have a shelter for them.Squirrels and birds enjoy the same foods.Squirrels invade your bird-feeders because of this. You could use pet food or bird food.
