Over time, the toilet seats tend to loosen up because they get a lot of use.It is time to adjust the toilet seat if you notice it is wobbly.To fix this problem, you can make a few adjustments to the bolts that hold the toilet seat in place.Attach toilet seat hinge washers to the bolts if the problem persists.If you want your toilet seat to be taller for more comfort, you can install a riser.You can always replace the toilet seat if you can't figure it out.
Step 1: Use a spray or wipe on the toilet.
The toilet seat and rim of the toilet bowl can be sprayed or wiped down.Germs,bacteria, and Viruses don't transfer to your hands as you work if you kill them with this.Germs and bugs can be found in toilets.
Step 2: If you're working on your toilet, don't touch your face with your hands.
Don't rub your face after you touch your toilet.You don't want to transfer germs to your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Step 3: When you're done, wash your hands with warm water and soap.
After washing your hands with warm water, lather them up with soap.To finish cleaning your hands, rinse off all the soap.If it is safe for your skin, you could use the same product you used to clean the toilet.
Step 4: There are bolts at the back of the seat that connect it to the bowl.
The toilet seat has 2 back corners.The bolts are exposed or the plastic caps are covering them.The bolts are hidden by plastic cover on most modern toilet seats.They could be square, rectangular, or round.
Step 5: If the toilet seat has plastic bolt covers, pop them off.
To pry up the bolts, use your fingers or a flathead screwdriver.If they are on plastic hinges, leave them open or set them aside.You will only be able to access the bolts from the bottom of the seat if the toilets have a long rectangular strip that covers them.If this is the case, skip this step.
Step 6: The toilet seat should be on the bowl.
The seat should be moved to the left or right.When you tighten the bolts, make sure it is adjusted correctly.
Step 7: Use a screwdriver to tighten the bolts.
While you tighten the bolts, hold the toilet seat in place with one hand.To secure the seat in place, turn each bolt clockwise until it stops spinning.Try to hold the nut on the underside of the bolts in place with your fingers or a pair of pliers if it's not getting tighter.The nut could be a metal wing nut, a round plastic nut or a regular metal hexagonal nut.You can tighten the nuts on the underside of the bolts with pliers or your fingers if the top sides are not accessible.
Step 8: Purchase a set of toilet seat washers.
These washers are designed to keep toilet seats in place.You can buy a set online or at a plumbing supply store.If you have already tried to tighten the bolts on your toilet seat multiple times, this is a good option.
Step 9: The bolts on the toilet seat need to be removed.
The bolts at the back of the toilet seat are covered by plastic.If you want to remove the bolts from the holes, you need to hold the nuts on the undersides of their bolts with pliers or your fingers and then use a screwdriver to turn them counterclockwise.Remove the nuts from the bottom side of the bolts if the top side isn't accessible.
Step 10: Attach the toilet seat hinge washer to the bolts.
Remove the toilet seat hinge washers from their packaging.There is a hole in the middle of each washer.If the toilet seat hinge washers are narrower at one end than the other, the wider end goes towards the top of the bolt.
Step 11: Remove the bolts from the toilet seat and bowl.
The toilet seat should be centered on the toilet bowl.The bolts should be moved through the holes.The washers need to be between the heads of the bolts and the toilet bowl to prevent them from coming loose.
Step 12: The bolts should be tightened all the way.
Attach the nuts to the bolts with pliers or your fingers.The bolts should be tightened all the way with a screwdriver.If you want to replace plastic bolt covers, snap them back into place over the bolt heads.Make sure the toilet seat is still centered before you tighten the bolts.
Step 13: Purchase a toilet seat accessory.
If you want to keep the shape of your existing toilet seat, choose a riser that is as close to it as possible.If you want to make your toilet seat taller, choose a height.When someone in your household has mobility difficulties, toilet seat risers are a good option.The risers are usually 2–4 in tall.If you want to get up after sitting down on the toilet, you can buy seat risers with handles.If you have wide hips, you should be able to sit comfortably on the toilet.
Step 14: Remove.
Remove the bolts holding the toilet seat to the bowl.Set the seat aside by lifting it off the bowl.New, longer bolts are required to attach everything to the toilet seat riser.If you ever want to remove the riser, you should keep the old bolts.
Step 15: The toilet seat riser is on the toilet bowl.
The rim of the bowl has a riser on it.The bolt holes at the back of the riser should be lined up with the bolts on the toilet bowl.Put the handles on the toilet seat riser according to the instructions from the manufacturer.
Step 16: Attach the toilet seat to the riser with the provided bolts.
Attach the bolt holes to your toilet seat by centering it on the riser.Put the nuts onto the bottoms of the bolts and tighten them to make sure everything is in place.Before you sit on the toilet, try wiggling the seat and riser to make sure they are stable.
