How To A compelling character is needed for your story.
A convincing character is important when writing a story.People don't like reading a story where the characters are dull. Before you begin your story, make sure you know your characters.
Step 1: People are watching.
Take a look at the characteristics of the people you know are different from everyone else.Does the boy who lives across the street have a habit of knocking things over?Does your best friend talk when she's excited? These could be quirks of the character you create.
Step 2: The character should be based on someone.
If you're not sure how to make a believable character, base your character on someone else.It could be a family member, a celebrity, or even you! It's easier for you if you base it on someone you know.
Step 3: You can get a file folder.
Everything you need to know about your character is in this folder. This will keep you organized. If that's what you want to do, you could make a folder on your computer and type everything up in Microsoft Word.
Step 4: Know what the character is like.
How tall is the person? Are they of athletic build, slim build or chubby? What is their hair color? How long is their hair?Is it straight, curly, wavy, or both?If you have a Sims game, make a Sim look like your character and take several screen shots. You can look through pictures on-line and in magazines to find a person that looks like you. This will allow you to see what your character looks like.Take pictures of your character.
Step 5: Character sketches can be done.
Recording the full name, birthday, ethnic background, and every detail of your character's personality is what this means. You can search for character sketch outlines. Many are helpful.Write down the basics, such as when is their birthday? How old are they?Who are their friends? What are their goals? What do they want to accomplish? What is their past like?Who is in their family?Do they have a family?Any animals? What are their favorite things?
Step 6: You can choose a name for your character.
As a writer, the name you choose will usually fit eventually, as readers get used to the combination, but names are important and must fit the personality of your character. The time period and location in which your story is taking place should be reflected in the name.Throckmorton isn't going to be the name of a boy living in a small town in South Georgia in the 1980s.Sometimes a long, complicated name is appropriate, but keep in mind how many times you will have to write it and your readers will need to read it.Not being able to say the main character's name is worse.
Step 7: The character has fears and secrets.
These can help you when you're stuck. What if Oliver is afraid of heights? What if the only way to save his sister is to climb across a bridge a mile above the ground?A compelling story can be created by knowing your characters' secrets. The plot and characters can be brought to life even more if the secret is slowly revealed.
Step 8: The character can be drawn.
Draw your characters if it helps you. While the personality of characters is more important than appearance when it comes to being convincing, appearance can help to develop the character as well.
Step 9: You should know your characters.
This will keep the plot going.Know their past, their biggest fear, and their most embarrassing moment. It's okay if some of this doesn't show up in your story.Knowing your characters will allow you to convince them that they are alive and well.
Step 10: You should interview your character.
Begin interviewing your character once you have the essentials down. How does she look at the world?Pretend you're interviewing a celebrity.Ask your character questions on some talk shows.Once you get a feel for your character, ask as many questions as you want.
Step 11: Make sure the aspects of your character are in the folder.
If you want to take another look at the details of your character while writing, put the folder in an easily accessible place. This will make sure that your character is strong from the beginning of the story to the end, instead of fading away as it progresses.A strong, convincing character is what you need to start your story.
