A sensory room could cost as much as $30,000. But, with some creativity, you can create a multi-sensory room (MSR) at home for a lot less money.
How do you set up a sensory gym?
- Assign, label, and promote the space.
- Use calming colors and lighting.
- Use carpet or mats to cover floors/walls.
- Add sensory/therapy room posters.
- Make sensory equipment available.
- Start slowly.
What is sensory equipment?
Sensory toys are designed to stimulate a child's five senses: sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. They might include elements such as bright, contrasting colors, sounds, or different textures. These toys are meant to help children develop their senses in a safe and natural environment using play.
What do you put in a sensory room?
- Bubble Wall. This bubble wall is a hit!

- Inflatable Pea Pod.
- Light Covers.
- Steamroller Squeeze Machine.
- Crash Mat.
- Liquid Tiles.
How do you create a sensory area?
- Large crash pillows or mats.
- Bean bag chair.
- Body sock.
- A net swing or therapy sensory swing.
- Fidget items that allow for a repetitive moment.
