In 2019, 37,595 motor vehicle traffic deaths occurred, for an age-adjusted death rate of 11.1 per 100,000 (Figure 1). Motor vehicle traffic death rates were stable from 1999 to 2006, declined on average by 8% each year from 2006 (14.5) to 2010 (10.7), and then increased from 2010 through 2019 (11.1).

Approximately 1.35 million people are killed in car accidents each year. That means, on average, fatal crashes cause approximately 3,700 deaths per day.
