I have a door handle that leads to my garage.Sometimes the door can't be opened from the garage side because the key is lost and someone will turn the internal lock. How do I get rid of this lock?
Glue can fail and look ugly.Other options cost money. You can see the connecting rod when you remove the inside knob.Cut this off so it doesn't use the lock button anymore.Don't cut the semi circular shaft that engages the main lever. To reassemble the knob, turn the remaining stub to the unlocked position. It's not possible to lock the knob without a key or disassemble it.
If you want to get a bunch of copies of the new key, you can take the lock to a locksmith and have it re-keyed.This can cost less than a new door.
As this would involve removing the knob and taking it the locksmith, I would probably just get a new knob, unless you really like the style/color/etc of the current one.
The door needs to be unlocked first.Put a piece of tape across the small knob that you use to lock the door.Glue the knob to the handle so that it can't be operated. The handle needs to be reinstalled.
The state requires that a business such as this have doors throughout the home that will not lock even if it has a locking mechanism.I placed a magnetic metal strip over the door to prevent it from locking, because the ones that won't lock cost almost $40 a piece. Most hardware stores will cut these strips to your specifications for less than $2 a piece. You can remove the strips if you decide to sell the home.
There were different keys for the bolt lock and knob.In the picture, I show what I cut on my knob to keep it from locking. The center post will need to be cut if you find that it looks more like a flat bar.
You can take the lock apart and remove the pins.If you want to get a set of keys made or get the lock re-keyed, you can bring the handle into a hardware store.
Something can be put in the frame-side slot.It was trivial to cut the cork from the wine bottle to fit in the slot where the bolt wouldn't spring-load in.Even if someone pushes in the door handle lock button, the bolt is not pulled.
The problem was solved by removing the knob side of the handle and driving it out. There is a hammer and a small diameter sockets that can be used.
