Three teenage girls from Australia are stranded on a volcanic island and end up in a pool under a volcano as a full moon bathes the pool in light. When the girls are rescued and brought back to shore, they discover their lives have become anything but normal.Ten seconds after coming into contact with water, the girls transform into mermaids. The girls discover they have supernatural powers over water.Lewis McCartney helped the trio keep their secret.
The girls struggle with their newfound abilities, which come with many advantages and disadvantages, while also trying to keep them a secret from everyone else, including their families, as everyday situations, such as bathing and dealing with rainy weather, become tricky. They are able to adapt to their new abilities.
Charlotte Watsford was dating Lewis shortly after Cleo broke up with him.She becomes the main villain of the second series. She has all three powers.Charlotte lost her powers in the end.
Emma has left to travel the world with her parents.A new character is introduced and it is discovered that she has been a mermaid since she was nine years old.Rikki and Cleo are befriended by a girl named Bella, but soon find out that she has a connection to a mysterious body of water.A new boy, Will Benjamin, also arrives and becomes friends with the trio. The girls are told that the planet is in the path of a comet. They were able to stop the comet from hitting Earth.
There are three different types of tails used on the show: custom-fitted tails that the girls swim in, a "floppy tail" used for stationary shots, and a hard tail for stunts. The custom costumes took six months to build, with the tails and tops made from body casts and individually hand-crafted scales. The finished product weighs between 26 and 33 lbs.The leg straps on the girls are inside the tail. The girls need to be lifted into the water.Attempts were made to reduce the on-screen visibility of the zips on the tails, such as adding extra scales and crafting a ridge of material. The tail fin was designed with a foot pedal to help actresses swim. The fin adds 60 centimetres to the costume's length.
