Even though your parents don't like it, you may want a pet.You may have adopted an animal if you hid it from a parent. You can hide your new friend from your parents by keeping them out of the way, cleaning up after them, and covering up the smell. Some pets are more difficult to hide than other animals. There are certain steps you can take to keep yourself and your pet safe.
Step 1: Decide where you will keep your secret pet.
If your parents are not likely to find your pet, you should look for a space that has plenty of room for it.If your parents need the space unexpectedly, you may want to have a back-up room. They should be contained within this space. An unused garage, a bedroom, and a backyard are options.
Step 2: The pet should be kept at someone else's house.
You can ask a friend to hold onto the pet if you can't hide it in your own home. You need to make sure that the pet still has food, toys, and bedding. If your parents don't allow you to move the pet into their house, you will find a new home for it.This is a better option for larger animals.
Step 3: In their room, place air fresheners.
Animals can smell bad.If the smell is not taken care of, it will spread and alert your parents.Make sure the pet's room is always clean.Fresheners can be used to combat the smell. This is a fire risk if lit scented candles are left in the room.
Step 4: Soundproof the room.
Make sure your parents can't hear your pet.Dogs bark, cats yowl, and hamsters run on creaking wheels. You can reduce the noise in a room.Hang cork boards or foam squares on your wall. You can buy both at a craft store. These can be decorated so that they don't look suspicious. It's a good idea to put a rug under the door to keep sound out.Leaving a stereo or TV on while you're out will cover up the noise. It should be on a medium volume.Your parents may enter the room to turn it off if it's too loud.
Step 5: Purchase the necessities for your pet.
You won't be able to get your parents to buy you pet food or a bed.If you save some money, you will be able to buy everything your pet needs.Pets need food, toys, and bedding. Some may need a cage.Dogs will need a bed, blankets, chew toys, treats, dry kibble, dishes for food and water, and a leash.Cats need a scratching post, toys, food and water bowls, dry food, a litter box, and a bed.The small rodents need a cage, dry food, fresh vegetables, a water bottle, timothy hay, toys, and soft bedding.A glass terrarium, UVB basking lights, food, rocks, and plants are required for reptiles and snakes.
Step 6: After your pet, clean it up.
The fur can be left on carpets, chairs, couches, and clothes.Stray fur can be picked up with a lint roller.A vacuum can be used to remove fur, wood, or pellet food.Make sure to clean the room at least once a week. You can use masking tape if you don't have a lint roller.Press the sticky side down on the furry surface if you unroll a few inches of tape.To remove fur, lift it.Disinfectants containing ammonia should not be used. The smell can cause dogs and cats to pee around the room.
Step 7: You should have a backup plan.
Most pets can't spend all of their time hiding, even if your plan is working well. You should keep your pet out of sight for a couple of weeks.Introduce your parents to your new pet and show them how well you took care of it.If your parents say no, make sure you have a good home for your pet.
Step 8: When your parents are not at home, walk the dog.
Dogs need a lot of time outside. They will need to exercise and poop.Do not think that you can just keep the dog inside because they are very difficult to hide.Wait until your parents are out of the house. You can wake them up early to take your dog outside. They can see your dog when you bring him in or out of the house. If possible, use a back door.
Step 9: The dog must be housetrained.
If your parents smell or find evidence of accidents in the house, it can be a sign. You will have to walk your dog every two hours. They should be encouraged to go in the same spot every time. When they are gone, give them a treat. They will be encouraged to only go outside. If the dog leaves a mess in the house, you should pick it up right away.Disinfectants can be used to mask the smell.
Step 10: The dog should be trained not to bark.
Your parents will soon be woken by noisy dogs. When your dog starts barking, give them a treat, and use a word like "quiet." The treat will get them to temporarily stop barking. They should stop barking when they hear the quiet command. They bark to protect their territory because they are bored or afraid.Make sure their room is soundproofed because there is no proven method to stop barking completely.
Step 11: The dog's bedding must be washed in a separate load.
Don't put furry blankets in the laundry hamper. You will have to wash your dog's bedding on your own.Until you have a full load, save up dirty blankets and beds.
Step 12: The dog needs to be washed outside of the house.
If you wash the dog in the bathtub, you can leave a big mess for your parents to find.Take your dog for a bath outside. If you fill up a tub of water, bring it outside. Before you wash your dog, make sure to comb his hair. Before you bring the dog back inside, make sure he is dry. It's probably a good idea to try this while your parents are away.
Step 13: It is better to choose dry food than wet.
The cat food is made of smelly fish.A suspicious scent can come from the cans being open around the house. It's possible that wet food attracts more pests, such as flies or roaches. It's better to choose dry pellets.
Step 14: The litter box can be hidden.
There are many ways to hide a litter box.A cat sized square can be cut from a cardboard box.The box should be over the litter box.A small cat door should be formed by the hole.Make sure the side with the cat door is open by covering the box with a blanket. The litter box can be stuck behind other furniture.Make sure your cat is comfortable going in and out.
Step 15: The litter box should be washed twice a week.
You should change the litter twice a week. There is a trash bag with cat litter in it.Don't put the litter in the trash can.It can give your parents information about your secret cat.Take the trash bag out to the curb or dumpster after you clean the litter box.The box should be washed with mild dish soap and water. It's a good idea to rinse completely.
Step 16: A scratching post is a must have.
Cats like to scratch. They will scratch up furniture if they don't have a scratching post.Your parents will notice your cat's claw marks. There should be some scratching toys for your cat.
Step 17: Invest in a cage.
hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, lizards, and snakes need a cage to live in.You can either let your animal run around the room or make a shelter out of a drawer or cupboard.Do not do this. There may not be enough air for your pet to breathe. If your parent sees them running around in the house, they may think it's a wild animal. You should always get a proper pet cage. There are cube and coroplast cages for pigs and rabbits.Animals can live in wire cages. The fish live in tanks. Some fish need aquarium lights.Animals live in glass. They will need a basking lamp.
Step 18: Place the cage in a corner or closet.
You can put the cage in a corner and arrange your furniture around it to keep it out of sight. If your closet is large, you can try to fit it there.Leave your closet door slightly open so that the air gets to your pets.Pets don't like being in the dark.If there is a small light attached to your cage, make sure the closet light is on.
Step 19: The cage can be placed on a high shelf.
Few cages are small enough to fit under a bed, but you can keep it out of sight on a shelf.Make sure you can easily reach the cage. There is a cage on the shelf. This works well for small cages.
Step 20: The cage needs to be covered with a blanket.
If you have a guinea pig cage, you can drape a blanket over it to hide most of it.Make sure that there is at least one wire free wall for your pets to look out from.Light objects, such as notebooks or jewelry boxes, can be placed on top of the cage to disguise it.If you have a fish tank, a wire hamster cage, or a reptile, this is not a good idea, as the top may need to be left open for oxygen, lamp wires, and exercise.
Step 21: The cage should be cleaned every week.
Do a thorough cleaning at least once a week, but you should scoop out any poop every day.Put your pet in a cage or box.Hay or litter can be put into a garbage bag.Take it to the curb. The cage can be washed with a mixture of water and dish soap.Put your pet back in when it's dry.If you have a reptile in a terrarium, be sure to keep it clean. If you have a fish, take it to a cooler full of water. Before returning the fish to the bowl, remove any debris and replace the water with fresh water.
Step 22: Turn off the lights at night.
If your pet needs light, you can turn off the light when it gets dark.During the day, reptiles need sunlight, but during the night they don't.Most types of fish are the same. It's convenient for you to give your parents a few hours of light at night before shutting off their aquarium light. If you own a specific breed, make sure to double check the guidelines. Some need more light than others.
Step 23: Clean your pet's cage.
You want to show your pet's best face to your parents.Give your pet a bath. They should clean out their cage and wash their bedding.Make sure their room is clean.Your parents may be more likely to let you keep the animal if they know it is well cared for.
Step 24: It is possible to find an alternate home.
If your parents say no, make sure you have your back-up plan in place.A friend or relative is willing to take your pet. They should be offered all of the necessary pet supplies.Unless you have other options, don't take your pets to a shelter.
Step 25: Make sure you practice what you say.
When you show your pet to your parents, make sure you are mature and collected.Write down what you want to say to them.Say it in front of the mirror a few times.
Step 26: Sit down with your parents
If you want to talk to your parents, you should be at home. You should tell your parents that you want to talk.Don't tell them when they are driving, cooking, or cleaning. You can talk with them over dinner.Don't approach them right after they get home from work. They may be stressed out.You should wait for them to relax before talking to them.
Step 27: Tell them.
It's important to be honest and straightforward.Let them know how well you take care of the pet.If they haven't noticed, point out that the pet is not as smelly as they might have thought. You should apologize for breaking the rules.Ask if you can keep the pet.To take care of the pet on your own.You can say, "I found a cat that needed a home."I have been looking after the cat in my bedroom for the last two weeks.I have taken care of her myself.I hope to care for her.Can I keep her even though I have broken your trust? You have to live with consequences if your parents say no.All of the pet's bedding, toys, and food should be given to another home. You could be punished or grounded.
Step 28: You can show your parents the pet.
Bring your pet with you. They should be allowed to hold and touch your pet.Your parents may be more likely to let you keep the pet if they form an emotional bond with it.
