Native to Azkaban, the Dementor's KissHover is capable of Mortality of an adult 3 metres above the ground.
The Dementor is considered to be one of the worst creatures in the wizarding world.Dementors can cause feelings of depression and despair in a person in close proximity to them. They can consume a person's soul, leaving their victims in a permanent vegetative state, and thus are often referred to as "soul sucking fiends".The British Ministry of Magic used to employ Dementors as prison guards, but they were not known to permanently reside in any other location.
The Dementors of Azkaban were employed by the Ministry until mid-1996, when Lord Voldemort appeared in theMinistry and their defection to the Dark Lord's cause became obvious. After the end of the Second Wizarding War in 1998, the Ministry was re- formed and the newly-appointed Minister for Magic Kingsley Shacklebolt made sure that they were not used by the government again.[4]
The Patronus Charm can be used against Dementors.Whoever can provide the most people to feed on is the true dementor. If the conditions in which they multiply are prevented from forming, then their numbers can be limited, but they do die off eventually.[4]
The history of Dementors is tied up with Azkaban. The island in the North Sea where the wizard prison is built has never appeared on a map.Ekrizdis, the first resident, may have built a fortress on the island to lure Muggle sailors to torture and kill them. The Ministry became aware of the site's existence after the various charms placed on the island faded.
The people who entered the fortress to investigate found a lot of Dementors. The large colony was allowed to remain unmolested because the Ministry was afraid of reprisals from the dark entities.
The Dementors were put to work as guards when Damocles Rowle was elected Minister for Magic in 1718.Despite protests, the plan was put into motion and Azkaban remained the prison of the wizarding world until the Second Wizarding War.The Dementors served the Ministry of Magic as the guards of Azkaban, allowing them to feed on the emotions of the prisoners within its walls.Between 1733 and 1747, Minister Eldritch Diggory visited Azkaban and was horrified by the despair and insanity that the Dementors caused within the prisoners. He formed a committee to find alternative solutions, the least of which was to remove the Dementors, which met opposition from those who feared a mainland invasion by the dark creatures if they were deprived of their food source. The campaign to find an alternative to Azkaban's Dementors was put on hold because of the death of Diggory.Dementors perform other services for the Ministry, such as being sent to guard other locations, escort prisoners to trial or even hunt down criminals, even though their primary function was to protect Azkaban.
Many in the wizarding world felt that the Dementors were necessary to keep the world safe, but some thought they were unreliable and unreliable. It was a mistake for the Ministry to ally with such creatures, though Alastor Moody thought violent criminals such as Death Eaters deserved such treatment.[5]
During the 1993-1994 school year, a legion of Dementors were sent to guard the school against "mass murderer" Sirius Black, who had recently escaped from Azkaban. The Dementors were stationed at Hogwarts because of the Ministry's belief that they were going to kill Harry Potter.Harry Potter had his first encounter with a Dementor when he was protected by the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor.Hearing the last moments of his parents' lives before they were murdered by Lord Voldemort was Harry's worst memory.
The Dementors were not allowed to enter the school grounds, but the students were warned not to harm them.Even though they were found to have entered the school, he wouldn't let them search or enter the castle because he considered them to be so dangerous.
During the second encounter with the Dementors, Harry lost consciousness and fell from his broom. He was the time when the Dementors were driven away by a Patronus. They had a bad effect on Harry because of his bad memories.Professor Lupin claimed that the atmosphere of excitement during a match would be like a feast for the Dementors.
Harry asked for help overcoming the Dementors. The Dementor in front of Harry was created by a Boggart that transformed into the Patronus Charm.Four Slytherins, Draco Malfoy,Vincent Crabbe, and Gregory Goyle pretended to be Dementors to distract Harry during the next match.Although not yet capable of producing a fully formed patronus, Harry was able to perform the spell well enough to derail their attempts and win the match, after which Professor McGonagall sentenced the offending students to detention and deducted fifty House Points from Slytherin.
When Harry and his friends were attacked by a group of Dementors in the Forbidden Forest, they were saved by the intervention of a powerful and fully formed Patronus.Harry initially believed that the Patronus of his dead father was conjured by him, but he actually traveled back in time with his friend Hermione to see him.The form of his father's patronus was a stag and the form his son took was an animagus. The Dementors tried to kiss Harry in the forest and it was enough to convince the Minister for Magic to remove them from Hogwarts at the end of the school year.He seemed very happy about it.
When Harry met an apparent Dementor in the Triwizard Tournament, he thought he had conjured the Patronus Charm, but then he realized it was a fake and cried 'Riddikulus'.The Death Eater, Bartemius Crouch Junior, responsible for the activities that occurred was captured, for his own security, and Dementor attacked the prisoner, who was also. The idea of removing the Dementors from Azkaban was suggested by Fudge as he did not believe that the return of Voldemort would result in the removal of the guards.
Harry and his cousin, Dudley Dursley, were attacked by two Dementors in an alley near his home on Privet Drive. He used the Patronus Charm and was led home by a Squib.Harry was put on trial for his use of magic, but was not punished as it was recognised as self-defence.Umbridge admitted the plan to attack and undermine Harry using the Dementors.[5]
By June 1996, all of the Dementors of Azkaban revolted against their employers and joined Lord Voldemort.Death Eaters escaped from Azkaban in 1996 and 1997.The July mist seen in the wizarding world was caused by the multiplication of the Dementors by mid-1996.They were a factor in the British Prime Minister's recent decline in terms of public approval, as they made people less happy.[6]
The Dementors were used to take away convicted Muggle-borns after interrogation and to terrorise them during interrogation when Harry Potter was in the Ministry of Magic. When Harry stunned her, she protected herself and the other questioners with a cat.The Muggle-born Mary Cattermole was being questioned when a Dementor tried to give her a kiss. All of the Dementors in the courtroom were driven into the corners by Harry's Patronus.Harry and Hermione used their Patronuses to keep the Dementors out of the courtroom and the hallway so that they could save the Muggle-borns.As the group left the area, Harry and Hermione left their Patronuses in the hallway to hold the Dementors at bay for as long as possible.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione hid under Harry's Invisibility Cloak after Apparating to Hogsmeade.Dementors were dispatched by the Death Eaters to attack the trio because they were not able to find them.Harry had to protect the trio from being kissed. The Anti-Disapparition Jinx stuck on the village made them unable to Disapparate. When Harry drove away the Dementors, he almost gave them away as his patrounus was very distinctive, but he saved them and brought them into his pub.
The Dementors fought on the side of the Death Eaters during the Battle of Hogwarts. The recent death of Fred Weasley, as well as large numbers of Dementors, made it difficult for Harry Potter, Hermione, and Ron to summon their Patronuses. The fate that came with a Dementor's kiss was welcomed by Harry, but he was encouraged by the other Patronuses to summon his own. There were more Dementors in the Forbidden Forest, but they were protected from them by the presence of James, Lily, Sirius and Remus.[7]
The Ministry of Magic was headed by a former Auror and Order of the Phoenix member. The Dementors were removed as guards of the wizard prison due to their actions during the war.It is not known where they went or what they did without their application.Aurors was placed in the prison as a guard after the Dementors were removed.
The Dementors were near the Great Lake at Hogwarts when Scorpius Malfoy was in one of the alternate realities. The student was caught by the headmistress of the school after he saw the creatures.[8]
After making a change in the past, Scorpius, Hermione, Ron Weasley, and Severus Snape were found by Dementors.Since they were wanted by the police, they decided to stay and save themselves.Ron tried to conjure a patronus, but she stopped him from doing so.They were found by the Dementors and drained of their souls.
Scorpius was encouraged by Snape to not give in to the despair of these creatures. They met Umbridge, who knew that Snape was working against them, but was turned down by his spell. The Dementors attacked, but Severus conjured up a Patronus and promised to keep them as long as possible to ensure that Scorpius could escape.Malfoy ran in the trail of a silver doe that deprived him of his soul. The Patronus made sure that Scorpius reached the Great Lake.[9]
Dementors have a humanoid shape and are covered in dark hooded cloaks that make them look like wraiths. Its body is greyed and decayed, and its breath sounds like it is trying to "suck more than air" out of a room. It's hands are "glistening, greyish, slimy-looking, and scabbed".They seem to be cold.
A Dementor's face has no eye sockets. There is a gaping large hole where the mouth should be, which is used for sucking the soul out of the victim in a process called the Dementor's Kiss. The Dementor sucks out the victim's soul and leaves the person an empty shell. They can only glide over the ground, and can't pass through obstacles.[3]
Dementors don't have eyes, so they are blind. They can sense a presence by looking at the victim's emotions.
Dementors seem to suck all the light and happiness from the air as they draw long rattling breaths, and cause darkness to close in everywhere and the victim to feel incredibly cold. They are able to glide towards a victim.
Their ability to taste and sense fear, as well as the promise of positive memories that it can feed off of, is debated. For a long time, they obeyed the Ministry of Magic because they were provided with the sustenance of any remaining hope or happiness in the prisoners. They can follow simple instructions, which allowed a Dementor to act as a bodyguard to Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge in 1995 and to bury dead prisoners in the prison grounds in 1997.They could communicate what they had heard in Black's sleep, as well as comment on his 'less human, less complex' state of mind, implying that they can speak or otherwise communicate with wizards.
Dementors were unable to differentiate between those they chase after and those that stand in their way, according to Albus. He told the students that forgiveness and mercy were not in a Dementor's nature. They reportedly don't have a soul of their own.
Outside of Azkaban, Dementors hunt for prey in groups of variable size, from as small as two to as large as twenty. They appear to attack by first surrounding their targets, then descending upon them all at once to feed.
Being blind, Dementors sense and feed on the positive emotions of human beings in order to survive, forcing their victims to relive their worst memories over and over again. As the number of Dementors increases, the atmosphere around the victim can become cold and dark.Azkaban's horrible reputation was due to the fact that those kept in the company of a Dementor were often depressed and driven insane.Rubeus Hagrid claims he wished he would die in his sleep after only a few months there. They are considered to be some of the worst creatures on Earth.
Dementors rely on their ability to sense emotion and physical and/or mental health to track the movements of the prisoners in their care, and are generally unable to distinguish one person from another if both are in similar physical or mental condition. They were not able to identify the two people who were sneaked into Azkaban as Bartemius and Barty Crouch Jnr, since both were ill nearly to the point of death. They are genderless and don't mate.
Dementors don't feel animal emotions in the same way as humans do.After being imprisoned in Azkaban in his dog form before his successful escape, his emotions were less human. The Dementors didn't understand why there was a difference in his emotions when he changed his form, but they thought he was losing his mind.
Muggles are affected in a similar way to wizards and witches because they can't see Dementors. If Squibs are able to see Dementors, it is under debate. It was confirmed that she lied when she claimed to have seen the Dementors in the court room.It is not clear if she was late or unable to see the Dementors.10
Dementors are capable of physical labour, such as grave-digging, after the mother of Morfin Gaunt and Bartemius Crouch Jnr died in Azkaban. When the Dementors came to give food, he escaped.
A wizard's powers can be lost if he remains in close contact with Dementors for an extended period of time. The truth to this statement is unknown because it is not expounded upon.It would make Dementors the only known being to permanently render a wizard without magic.Depression caused by long contact with Dementors can be detrimental to a wizard's ability to cast spells.
In addition to feeding on positive emotions, Dementors can also suck out a victim's soul with their last and most dangerous ability. The victim is left as an empty shell with no chance of recovery. As a person's soul is their true self, to be kissed by a Dementor is to cease to exist, and yet also remain. The Ministry of Magic occasionally allowed this as a punishment. It is not known what effect a Dementor's Kiss would have on a person who had used a Horcrux. The victim is unable to pass on because the soul is trapped inside the Dementor."worse than death" is probably what it is.
Barty Crouch Jnr is the only known victim of the kiss. After it was discovered that he had been teaching at Hogwarts while pretending to be Alastor Moody, he was arrested and held at the castle, awaiting trial. He was punished by a Dementor and a bodyguard. The Ministry continued in its denial despite the fact that the act rendered Crouch unable to testify about his master's return, allowing Voldemort almost a full year to gather strength.
The Patronus Charm was used to protect Harry Potter from Dementors.
No one has ever demonstrated the ability to kill a Dementor through physical means, implying that they can only be driven away or temporarily kept at bay.The Patronus Charm is one of the few ways to protect yourself from Dementors. The charm summons a Patronus, a magical embodiment of good will and happiness, which provides varied levels of protection against the Dementors' influence, based on the caster's strength as a wizard.Harry Potter was able to hold off hundreds of Dementors with a single corporeal Patronus because he had enough ability.[3]
The Dementor can't feed on the Patronus. When summoned by an experienced caster, the Patronus will be an animal significant to the individual.Dementors are forced to flee the vicinity when corporeal Patronuses chase them down.An incorporeal Patronus only slows down when it is walking through quicksand and can give the caster time to escape.
Since Dementors can't properly sense the less complex thoughts and emotions of a person when they take on an Animagus form, some, such as Sirius Black, were able to temporarily avoid feeling the effects of the DeMentors' presence. The Dementors thought that he was losing his mind when they saw the less-than-human thoughts of his Animagus form.
The effects of a Dementor's happiness-draining powers can be resisted if one focuses not on happy thoughts, but on obsessions, or other things that give one strength without exactly making one feel better. It was possible for Sirius to avoid going mad in the Dementors' custody by focusing on the fact that he was innocent and that Peter Pettigrew was at Hogwarts. However, this feat was mostly attributed to the fact that he is an animal who is able to temporarily avoid feeling the effects of the Dementors' presence in his animal form.
Though not a common method of repelling Dementors, the enigmatic form people take after being brought back by the Resurrection Stone appears to function much like a Patronus. The Dementors had no effect on Harry after he came back from the brink of death because he was so happy.
Harry Potter disagreed with Professor Snape on the best way to confront a Dementor when it was the subject of a report in his sixth year. This means that there are other methods.Reducing the effects and conditions of the habitat that Dementors prefer would cause them to be driven away.Other methods may include the use of Felix Felicis to increase a wizard's luck, or with the help of Occlumency to keep calm and confident, both of which would eventually lead to the point that awizard could easily cast the Patronus Charm to fend.
Both the Muggle and wizard worlds use chocolate as a mood enhancer. If you have been overcome by Dementors, chocolate is the perfect antidote, it will make you feel better.Chocolate is only a short-term remedy. If one wants to become permanently happier, they need to find ways to fight off Dementors.Muggle or wizard cannot benefit from excessive chocolate consumption.[2]
Dark Wizards don't usually produce patronuses. They don't need to because they are like-minded in evil.According to Voldemort, they are natural allies.Dementors can still imprison dark wizards in Azkaban.
Any evil or fearsome creature is referred to as dementor in the English language. The Latin dmens means "insane".
In the film series, Dementors are portrayed differently than in the books. In the books, they were described as tall hooded humanoid figures, whereas in the films they are dressed in black robes.
The Dementors can fly freely in the films. The books did not include this aspect, where they were gliding over the ground. The first match in the Prisoner of Azkaban was interrupted by the Dementors. In the book, the Dementors were described as standing in a stadium, while in the film, they were chasing a broomstick. The corporeal Patronus Charm in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban seems to work differently because it sends a pulse at the Dementors instead of charging at them.
The environment appears to have a more drastic effect on the Dementors from the films. The surroundings of a Dementor are covered by a layer of ice in the films.According to the book, Dementors are accompanied by a cold mist in the environment. The first Dementor Harry encountered in the third film was able to open the Hogwarts Express without touching it, causing it to slide open with a wave of its hand. The first Dementor in the fifth film was able to pin Harry to a wall by lifting him off the ground.
