Tapestries can be a great way to add a little flair to a room. They can add texture to the walls. If hung properly, tapestries look better if they fall. With a few steps, you can hang a tapestry on your wall in no time at all.
Step 1: If your tapestry has a pocket, use a rod with fins.
Most tapestries have a rod pocket on the top edge. You can use a rod, which will look like a curtain rod. This is a simple way to hang tapestries. There are brackets that can be added to the wall to hang the rod. This method will result in your tapestry hanging away from the wall, with the distance depending on your brackets.Try another method if you want tapestry to hang flush with the wall.
Step 2: You can get a rod, wall brackets.
Choose a rod that will fit in with the room's decor. You can use normal curtain rods, even if they are made for tapestries. You have to make sure the rod fits inside the tapestry pocket. The diameter and length of the rod depends on the tapestry's weight and width.A 1/2 inch to 1/3 inch diameter rod can hold a tapestry of anywhere from 2 to 10 lbs.The rod should be long enough so that the brackets meet the edges of the tapestry. The tapestry will be able to slightly shadow the brackets, giving them more focus. The tapestry should hang at least 12 inch away from the wall if wall brackets stick out a little. This will stop the build-up of water.
Step 3: Determine where you want to hang the tapestry.
The center of the tapestry should be at eye level for an average person. You can hang the tapestry if you want it to fit in with the rest of the room.If you have high walls, you may have to hang the tapestry a bit higher.
Step 4: If necessary, iron the tapestry.
ironing may be needed prior to hanging your tapestry. To iron on the back of the tapestry, use a low to medium iron.Place a dye-free bed sheet over the front of the tapestry to iron if the creases don't come out by ironing the back.If you want to remove the creases, you need to increase the temperature of the iron and use some steam, but first you have to test in a corner.
Step 5: You should find your studs.
Attach your brackets to the wall studs using a stud finder. The brackets should sit just outside the width of the tapestry.Make sure the holes are even so that the tapestry doesn't end up crooked.Tapestries can be hung on wall studs. You can hang the tapestry wherever you please with the use of drywall screws. If you don't have a level, you can measure from the ceiling to where you want to hang the tapestry. The distance from the ceiling to the hole should be the same on both sides.
Step 6: Attach your brackets.
Attach the brackets to the wall with the holes you have drilled.Make sure you use the correct screws. These can be wood screws or masonry screws.
Step 7: The back of the tapestry has a pocket for the rod.
The back of the tapestry has a rod pocket on it.Attach the ends of the rod.
Step 8: Hang your tapestry on the brackets and enjoy!
One last time, put the rod into the wall-mounted brackets and make sure everything is secure.
Step 9: You can hang a tapestry with a rod pocket on the wall.
The method of hanging wall tapestries is very easy and inexpensive, but it still requires the tapestry to have a rod pocket on the back.By using this method, your tapestry will be hung straight. The tapestry is hung flush against the wall with this method.
Step 10: There is a piece of baseboard that is slightly shorter than the tapestry.
If you want to make a tapestry, you should cut a piece of wood that is slightly shorter than the width of the tapestry. The plastic bar is harder to drill through than the metal one.The back of the tapestry has a rod pocket.
Step 11: There are holes in the baseboards.
There are drill holes at each end of the baseboard. The holes should fit the screws you will be using.
Step 12: Find your studs.
The stud finder can be used to locate the stud in the wall.It will help you to find the most secure location to hang your tapestry. If you don't have studs or want to put the tapestry in another location, you can use masonry screws or drywall screws.
Step 13: If you want to drill the holes, mark the screw locations on the walls.
To mark the location of the screws on the wall, use the baseboard. You can mark the wall with a pencil or screw if you hold the baseboard level against it.To align the holes in the baseboards at these locations, drill holes into the walls.Make sure your tapestry is hung straight by making sure the baseboard is level.
Step 14: If you are using wall anchors, make sure to insert them.
If you need wall anchors, then you should put them into the drilled holes. It is important to make sure your screws don't slide out from the wall with the help of wall anchors.
Step 15: The tapestry has a rod pocket on it.
The back of the tapestry should have a rod pocket on it.
Step 16: Attach the screws to the wall through the baseboard.
Start with one side at a time and screw through the baseboard into the wall anchor on the other side.Attach the screw on the other side.
Step 17: Make sure the tapestry is level.
Take a step back now that the tapestry is hung to make sure everything is level. You are finished if everything is good.
Step 18: If your tapestry does not have a rod pocket, use this method to add one.
If you don't have a rod pocket in your tapestry, you can hang it using the previous methods. This is an easy way to get your tapestry ready for hanging.
Step 19: There is a strip of cloth that is slightly shorter than the tapestry.
You can use cotton or linen. The materials are strong enough to hold up the tapestry. The strip must be wide enough to be wrapped around your rod.
Step 20: The tapestry has a strip of cloth across it.
To sew the strip across the tapestry, use heavy cotton button-hole thread. To support the tapestry, you should catch at least two warp threads with each stitch. If you use thread that is the same color as a dominant color of your tapestry, it won't be noticeable. You need to sew the strip so that it sticks up.When the rod is inserted, this will make room for the tapestry to lie straight.Even if your tapestry does not have a straight edge, be careful that your strip is straight. The tapestry will hang crooked if your strip is not sewn straight.
Step 21: There is a rod in the pocket.
You can either use a tapestry rod or a baseboard to hang in the other two methods. There is a rod that is slightly shorter than the tapestry. If you use a short rod, you can hang it on two screws on the wall. You can't see hanging apparatus from the front side.
Step 22: Make sure your tapestry hangs straight.
Look at the tapestry to make sure it is straight. If it is not possible to take out the stitches and put it back together.
Step 23: The tapestry can be hung using a method that is easily alterable.
You can change the locations of the tapestries from time to time. When hanging tapestries on curved walls, it's a good idea to use Velcro because it conforms to the wall on which it is mounted. Many museum curators prefer this method for tapestries.
Step 24: You need a strip of Velcro.
You should get a piece of Velcro that is shorter than the width of the tapestry. You will need both sides of the Velcro to attach them together. The tapestry you are using will affect the width of the Velcro. There is a width between 12 inch and 4 inches. The larger the tapestry, the bigger the Velcro you should use to support it.
Step 25: The tapestry has a soft, fuzzy side.
To sew the fuzzy side of the Velcro to the tapestry, use heavy cotton button-hole thread.Make sure you sew over at least two warp threads so that it is strong enough to hang.If you want your tapestry to blend in, make sure the thread is the same color as one of the dominant colors. You can machine Stitch the canvas strip first and then hand Stitch it to the tapestry in the same way. This supports the tapestry to hang straight.
Step 26: You can get a piece of wood and drill holes in the ends.
The width of the tapestry should be smaller than the strip. The piece of wood has a hole in it.The holes should be centered.
Step 27: The piece of wood needs to be stapled.
The piece of Velcro should be stapled along the wooden board at one inch spacing. The holes in the board should not be covered by the Velcro. You can either use a bendable board or attach the tapestry directly to the wall.
Step 28: To mark holes on the wall, use the board.
To mark the locations of the two holes on the wall, hang up the baseboard and make sure it is level.Remove the board and drill into the wall.If you are drilling into the wall, you should put wall anchors in it.
Step 29: Attach the screws into the wall.
To secure the board, screw the screws through the pre-drilled holes. Before proceeding, make sure the board is level.
Step 30: Attach the tapestry to the board.
Press the tapestry against the board to secure it.Make sure the tapestry is hung straight.
Step 31: There is a tapestry on stretchers.
The tapestry is attached to the stretched fabric with a frame. This provides a border for your tapestry.
Step 32: A piece of painted plywood can be used to make a wooden frame.
A wooden frame can be made using four thin pieces of wood cut to the desired lengths and widths.Corner brackets increase the stability of the frame. It is possible to use a piece of painted plywood as your backing. You can cut the piece to the size you want. The frame should be at least one inch wider on each side than your tapestry, but you can use any border size you want. You can use foam core for your background instead of wood. The foam core is an ideal base, but not suitable for heavy tapestries. For smaller tapestries, use a foam core.
Step 33: The canvas is stretched over your frame or plywood.
The canvas should be stretched over the frame or plywood.Make sure the piece of material is at least 1.5 inches long on each side so that you can fold it over easily.Attach the material to the frame with wood staplers. If you want to use silk as your border, you should stretch it over a sturdy canvas or other material. The canvas underneath will provide support, but you can also create the look you want. The middle layer of cotton flannel can be used in between.
Step 34: The tapestry should be sewed to the fabric.
Attach the tapestry to the background with heavy cotton thread and large staggered stitches.Make sure the stitches cross at least two warp stitches. You can't see the stitches from the front if you pick a color thread that matches the tapestry's dominant color. To support the weight of the tapestry, sew along the edges as well as in other areas. The frame and tapestry can be combined with the Velcro method. If you want to change your tapestry locations, you can un-Velcro and switch them.
Step 35: If you wish, use a frame.
If you choose to use a purchased frame, you can use it with your tapestry. The canvas and tapestry should fit inside the frame. You don't want the glass or plexiglass cover to touch the tapestry if it will cause a build up of water.A shadow box or plexiglass box is used to frame tapestries.Make sure the air circulation in the frame is good.
Step 36: You can hang your frame on the wall.
Hang pictures on the wall using normal methods. You can find the studs in the wall by looking at the frame. You can hang your frame by resting the edges on the screws. If you hang the frame using a level, it will hang straight.Hanging picture frames on the walls can be done with a variety of hardware. If your frame is heavy, you will need to use heavy-duty hardware or it will fall.
Step 37: If you have a tapestry with fringe at the top, use this method.
The fringe hanging down from the tapestry may not be very appealing.A cleaner and more polished look can be created by hiding the top fringe behind a board or piece of wood.
Step 38: Cut a piece of wood that is less than the width of the tapestry.
The weight of the tapestry will affect the size of wood you need to hold it up.If your tapestry is large or heavy, you should use larger pieces of wood.
Step 39: The piece of wood needs to be painted.
The tapestry will be touching the wood if it is not painted. You will be able to see the board on the ends, so use a color that matches the wall or the tapestry's dominant colors.
Step 40: There is a heavy fabric along the top edge of the tapestry.
Cut a heavy canvas-type fabric so that it is a few inches longer than the tapestry. To sew this canvas to the tapestry, you must hand sew it.If you need more support for heavier tapestries, you can use a wider strip of canvas. If the tapestry end is not straight, you will end up with a crooked tapestry. You may need several rows of stitches when sewing on the canvas.Make sure the stitches cover at least two warp threads and use heavy cotton thread to match the color of the tapestry.
Step 41: To flop this section to the back, fold over the edges of the canvas.
The fringe and edges of the tapestry should be covered by folding the canvas strip around to the back.If you flop the entire piece over, it will face the back.
Step 42: Attach the wall with holes in the board or piece of wood.
The holes should be near the ends of the board.equidistant from the ends is what they should be.
Step 43: The board can be used to mark and drill holes.
Place the board against the wall to mark the locations you will be drilling into. The best option is to use a stud finder. You can place the screws directly into the wallboard. If you are drilling into masonry, insert wall anchors. If you have a large tapestry, make sure the screws are strong enough.Check the manufacturer's label for strength.
Step 44: Put the board or painted piece of wood under the flap with the staplers.
The painted board should be between the canvas and top of the tapestry. To staple the canvas directly to the back of the wood, use wood staplers.
Step 45: Lift up the tapestry and secure it to the wall.
While you are driving screws through the board and into the wall, you may need help to hold up the tapestry. The board needs to be level and secure. The tapestry should be between the board and the wall. You need to secure the board tightly against the wall to hold the tapestry in place.
Step 46: Allow the flap of tapestry to come down again to make sure it's level.
The tapestry can be brought down if the board is securely attached to the wall.Make sure everything is straight and orderly.
