Moss is an incredibly versatile plant. It doesn't need a lot of water to grow and is great for water purification and erosion control.Moss can be grown indoors if you don't have enough space to grow it outside. You can grow moss in your home in no time if you have a damp, well-lit area with high humidity.
Step 1: Purchase large, transparent containers.
These can be either glass or plastic. You can easily reach into them to maintain your moss if they are wide and shallow. If you want to store your moss in a terrarium, make sure it has a lid.You can get these items at your local store. You can purchase these containers online.Depending on your budget, amount of space in your home and how much time you want to spend maintaining the garden, the size of the container you pick may be different.
Step 2: To create a base, line the moss garden bottom with pebbles.
The base has to be one pebble deep.Base it set when you cover the entire bottom of your container.Saturated sand is a good base for a variety of moss species.Colorful and different-shaped rocks can make your moss garden look better. You can find pebbles near your home or you can go to a home improvement store.Purchase saturated sand at your local hardware store or online. If you are going to plant forest mosses in your garden, don't base them on potting soil.
Step 3: The base should be applied with rotten bark or pine needles.
You just need one evenly spread out layer across the base. You can cover the pebbles or sand with pine needles. Most moss species prefer these items because they help them develop faster.Either pine needles or rotten bark can be used to put over the base.
Step 4: There are areas around your home where moss can be found.
moss can be found in upland areas. If you find some, peel it from its base and put it in a clean container. The moss covered twigs work well for this project. You need to wear gloves while you do this.If you plan on collecting moss from public land, ask for permission from the correct authorities.Bring your containers with you so you can get an accurate measurement of how much moss you need.
Step 5: The large sheets of moss should be placed over the base.
The moss should go directly on top of the stones. To cover the base, layer the moss. You should only be looking at the moss itself, not the rocks or bark below it, when you view your moss garden from above.
Step 6: To keep large sheets in place, stick toothpicks into moss.
toothpicks are placed along the outer part of the moss garden.Moss can be disrupted if it is secured. You can keep the toothpicks in your garden because they won't harm the moss.
Step 7: The moss garden can be misted with distilled or purified water.
Over watering the moss will stunt its growth, so use a spray bottle to do this. The moss could die if you let it dry out.You can buy distilled water at home improvement stores or online.
Step 8: To keep the garden moist, cover the containers with a lid.
The slightly higher temperature created by the closed containers will cause the moss to evaporate. The water falls back to the moss below when it condenses on the walls.A constant supply of water for the moss will keep it damp and healthy.Your garden only needs minimal care since the water is recycled back to the moss.
Step 9: Don't store your moss garden in the sun.
Your moss will be harmed by too much sunlight.Things can get a bit tricky here. The moss needs to be in an area with good air circulation and a light source nearby. In a well-lit room, keep the moss garden near a cracked window.Make sure the lamp isn't over the container if you're going to put it next to the moss garden.Exposure to light will hurt the moss.
Step 10: The garden can be sprayed with distilled water a few times a day.
Mist your moss multiple times a day using a spray bottle.Close your containers immediately after spraying so the moss can reuse the water. You should keep an eye on your moss to see how it is doing. If your moss feels dry, apply the water.
