Gardener's PathMonterrey Oak is a tree nursery in Dallas, Texas.
There are two trees out front of this house. Both were over ten feet tall, but neither had leaves. When we first saw the house, we thought they were deciduous. We almost lost the other one because of neglect from the previous owner and the horrible tree planting practice of the landscaper.I was able to pull out the 20 gallon root ball from the back of the compost when I dug up the dying tree.Over the last eight months it has shown remarkable recovery after I began a regular slow/deep watering just outside the drip line. Not entirely evergreen--ours has lost almos, but it seems healthy other than some spots on it.There is a tree forum for help ID.New growth on this tree gives us hope that it will shade our large front yard in the future.
In 2012 the Monterey Oak was 30 feet tall. The tree is shaded from the extreme heat of the Arizona desert afternoon sun because it was planted on the eastern exposure of a two-story house.Within a week of new growth appearing in the spring, leaves on the tree fall. The acorns are small. The tree is well-behaved and tolerant of the weather.
What is the size of the Monterey Oak and how much is it?
Does this tree have many shallow roots like Live Oaks do?Is it possible to plant plants under it?We couldn't grow anything under our live oaks and Asian jasmine.
Near my home in south Austin, there is a beautiful specimen of a tree.It is 45 feet tall and very healthy.I am told that the tree is 17 years old.In January of 2007, I planted two in my yard. They are doing just fine 13 months later.I wouldn't call it evergreen in central Texas. The tree starts losing leaves in December and January and can be mostly bare by February.News leaves are starting to grow.
This plant is a great shade plant. After it is established, stand up to the heat.Slower than some of the oaks, but faster than most.A good area will be shaded by a 5-10 year tree.
