I am interested in painting my tankard with my heraldry so that it would be easy to identify.
I don't want it to be a short term thing, I want my design to stay, and I do not want to have to worry about what to mask.
I use high-temp Rust-Oleum spray paint.It isn't coming off because it's made for BBQs, engines, etc.For the Heraldry, I suggest those little bottles of model paint with which one paints plastic models or WarHammer figures.It must be safe because it's made for kids.
If you want to spray the finished product, I would experiment first.To get that right, you'll need a lot of sandpaper.Do not use it if alcohol is present.

Why does it need to be food safe if it's only outside?Unless you're going to be spilling the contents over the sides and then licking it off, it won't be in contact with food so you can use any paint that sticks to metal.It is possible to apply paint to metal.I believe Pebeo's Vitrail is suitable for metal.They are baked on in a home oven and then dishwasher proof, at least they are on glass and ceramic.Unless it's something like a pottery glaze, fired on at 1400F or a very high temperature, they are not considered food safe.
I wouldn't use spray paint if I wanted a temporary thing on a tankard.
