Sometimes you have to get a cat into a crate or give them medicine that they won't take.It can be difficult to capture an angry or upset cat.Fortunately, there are strategies that you can use to catch a feline friend.
Step 1: You should protect yourself from bites and scratches.
Cats can break through your skin if you wear long sleeves. It's better to have thicker fabrics like a hoodie, sweatshirt, or flannel.Even with long sleeves, you can still get bitten or scratched.Even if they don't break the skin, bites and scratches can hurt.
Step 2: Put the cat in one room.
To make your cat less likely to escape, close the doors to empty rooms. As you close the doors, be as calm as possible because the cat will pick up on what you are doing.Try to put your cat in a room with less furniture or items that are easy to move.If the cat will let you pick it up and carry it into a small room with few places to hide, you should be able to administer the medicine. You can use that room as a secured location by closing the door. The method should only be used with cats that are not injured.
Step 3: There are places to hide.
There are chairs and side tables in the hall or closet. If you can, close the closet door and block off the space to the best of your ability.Even though you can't block off a bed, you should be able to prevent your cat from getting under furniture.
Step 4: A heavy towel or blanket is required.
Your towel should be long enough to cover the cat but not so long that you can't wrap it around him.A large towel is a great option. The heavier the towel, the more control you will have over the cat.
Step 5: Talk to the cat.
Before you attempt to catch it, speak in a calm voice and sit near your cat.If you can reduce the stress in the situation, you will be able to calm your kitty.
Step 6: Throw a towel or blanket over your cat.
Once your cat calms down or walks into an open position, cover it with a blanket and scoop it into your arms.Cats have fast reflexes and can outmaneuver slow humans.
Step 7: Put your cat in the blanket.
You can make a cat burrito by sliding a towel or blanket under the cat and securing it with the other end.Your cat will cry, but don't let it go.It will be harder to catch your cat a second time if you let go.
Step 8: You should hold your cat against your body.
If you press against the warmth of your body, the cat will calm down more quickly and you will have a better grasp on it.
Step 9: Your cat has a head.
Keeping your cat's head free will help it breathe and lower its anxiety. You will need access to its mouth and throat to give it medicine. If you want the medicine to go down, you have to put it in the cat's mouth.
Step 10: Once you have a grasp on it, don't let go.
It is better to hold on to the cat even if it has the upper hand.It will be nearly impossible to catch it again if it gets away. The cat should be released as soon as possible.
Step 11: There are other ways to give your cat medication.
If you are trying to catch the cat so that you can give it an oral medication, you might try hiding the pill in food, such as a cat of tuna.Contact your vet if this doesn't work.Let them know how hard it is to give medicine to a cat.Depending on your cat's prescription, they may be able to inject the medication at their office or give you a gel.
Step 12: The cat should be used to being in a pet carrier.
Put the pet carrier out where the cat can see and explore it if you know that you will need to load your cat into it.The cat will get used to the carrier and will be able to check it out on its own.If you leave food and treats in the carrier, your cat will find them.Once your cat is inside the pet carrier, close the door.Give your pets and cat treats when you open it again to reward them for getting into the carrier.Take your pet for a few minutes to get used to it when your cat enters the carrier on its own.If you don't have time to teach your cat how to use the pet carrier, put fragrant food like tuna fish inside it to make it interesting to the cat.
Step 13: Cats can be used with cat pheromones.
Cats benefit from the calming effect of pheromones. It is possible to lower your cat's anxiety by spraying the pheromones on your pet carrier. On the day you need to travel with the cat, you could use the pheromones.
Step 14: You can use a laser pointer.
Get your cat to chase the red dot.The cat can get focused on catching the dot if it plays with it first. The cat will run into the carrier. If your cat likes playing with lasers, this works well.If you want to land the dot inside a small case, you will have to use a larger crate or a crate with a top opening.
Step 15: You can make a cat burrito.
You will need to wrap the cat in a towel if it is still reluctant.Put your carrier on a stable surface near your cat by opening the door.Follow the instructions for using a towel or blanket. If your cat is wrapped like a burrito, slide it into the pet carrier tail first.Don't let the cat escape when it's in the carrier because it will be harder to catch it a second time.If your cat is upset, close the door of the carrier and allow it to calm down. The cat may be able to get out of the towel on its own.
Step 16: You should carry your pet carrier against your chest.
If you hold the carrier against your chest, it will be easier for the cat to get inside. It will be easier to catch your cat next time if you keep it happy. To keep your cat from seeing the world, cover the pet carrier when you are carrying it.While the carrier is stationary, remove the cover.
Step 17: The cat should be fed.
Putting out food can make wild cats lower their defenses because they are usually hungry. The cat needs to be used to coming to your trapping spot before you can trap it.Put food in the same place and time each day so that the cat can see it.If there are more than one cat, make sure they have enough to eat.Water will be provided so that the cat won't be dehydrated.
Step 18: The cat must be trained to enter a trap.
The feeding location is where you want your trap to be.Slowly move the food into the trap by placing it outside. The cat will eat the food if it is in the back of the cage.To get used to the trap, give the cat a week or two of feedings. The cat can move in and out of the trap if the door is open.A trip-plate trap is an option.A trip-plate trap has an open door that is shut by a mechanism connected to the food plate. The trapper doesn't need to have good timing because the door shuts.Drop traps can be used to trap cats.Traditional traps include a box held up by a stick that the trapper will pull out.If the cat has learned how to avoid trip-plate traps, drop traps are a good option.Place the schedule the same as before. To make sure cats don't get trapped or harmed, watch the trap while it's out.
Step 19: Set the trap.
Once the cat is used to entering the trap to eat, set thetrigger plate so that the door won't open again.
Step 20: The cat is hungry so stop feeding it.
You can wait a day or two between feedings so that the cat is more likely to be hungry if you are still having trouble catching it.The trap should be placed in the normal feeding spot after the two day withdrawal period. The cats go into the trap to get food.Continue to give the cat water so that it won't get dehydrated and will keep coming to the feeding spot.Chicken or tuna fish is a more appetizing entree if the cat doesn't go in the trap.It is possible to disguise the trap in a bush.
