Teens are often called immature by their parents. You might be on a mission to become more mature. You may not be able to mature until you go through different life experiences. If you want to become more mature to others, there are a few areas you can modify.Improve your behavior, emotional responses, intellectual abilities, and communication style to become more mature.
Step 1: Don't let your emotions get in the way of others.
To be mature, you will have to deal with the uncomfortable feelings you experience, such as anger, disappointment, or embarrassment.Cursing or shouting will not help you look mature. You can find healthy ways to express your emotions.Understand why you are feeling this way. What happened before, how does it feel in your body, and how would you describe it?Determine how you can express this feeling without hurting yourself or others. You could write in a journal, burn off some steam by exercising or playing sports, or listen to music that reflects your emotions.
Step 2: Take responsibility for your actions.
It isn't good to blame someone else or make an excuse when you make a mistake. You can ruin your relationships if you put the fault on others. If you don't face consequences, you will never learn and grow. When you make a mistake, take full responsibility. You can admit your wrongdoing by doing this.If you hurt someone, apologize. You have to figure out how you can make up.If your cat got out after you left the back door open, admit it.You could say, "I'm sorry."I didn't open the back door.I will ask the neighbors if they have seen the cat.
Step 3: Think before you act.
Thinking about the consequences of your actions is maturity.Take a few seconds to think about the outcome of your words or actions when you are about to say something. It can get you into trouble if you act on impulse.Pause before taking any action to prevent impulse reactions.Take a few deep breaths. What is my conscience telling me?Will this hurt me or anyone else?If a friend asks you if you want to cut class, you have to think about how you would feel if someone did this to you.You could breathe deeply and pause.Maybe you just want to hang out.If you do it, you could get in trouble with the school and your parents. Each time you make a choice, you'll be able to make smarter decisions.
Step 4: Practice gratitude.
When you learn to appreciate the things you have, adults are more likely to respect and admire you.Do not complain about what you don't have.Practice gratitude. At the end of each day, write down three things that went well for you.Think about the positive events or outcomes.Try to make them feel good.
Step 5: Follow the rules
You need to respect authority if you want to act mature. You will have to obey authority figures no matter where you go.Comply with the rules if they are set to keep you and others safe.Sometimes teens want to push back against authority. If you want to discuss rules with authority figures, argue your case in a respectful manner. The adult is more likely to listen. You could say, "I think I deserve a later curfew because I am fifteen now."I never get into trouble when I come home on time. What do you say?
Step 6: You should be a leader.
Showing responsibility in the different aspects of your life is one of the best ways to be more mature.Have good study habits and participate in class.Try to hold a leadership office in a club or get a part-time job if you think you have enough time.
Step 7: You should be responsible and own up to your actions.
Follow through on your commitments and take care of yourself. If you get in trouble for some reason, be honest and accept the consequences. You can show your maturity by holding yourself accountable for your actions. If your friends invited you to a sleepover but you already agreed to babysit your younger siblings, politely turn them down.Being mature means sticking to your commitments and showing that you can be trusted to follow through.
Step 8: Use your manners.
Good manners show respect.Proper behavior helps adults see you as mature.Good manners include saying "yes, sir/ma'am," answering the phone with "hello," and holding the door for the person walking behind you. Many rules of politeness may have been explained to you.You can ask your parents how to show good manners.
Step 9: You should clean up after yourself.
A mature person does not expect others to clean up their messes. If you are a teen trying to be mature, you will want to pick up after yourself. It means wiping up spills and putting your plate away. After using games, movies, or books, you should return them to their proper place.Put clean clothes in drawers or in the closet if you want to keep your room tidy.Immediately after you get up, make your bed.You can keep your book bag off the floor by placing it behind the door.Put your shoes on the shelves in your closet or under your bed.If you want to make it easier to tidy, set a timer for 20 minutes and clean your room once a day.Make the time go faster by playing music.
Step 10: You should develop smart and healthy habits.
A mature teen knows not to do bad things. You will get into trouble or hurt if you use alcohol and drugs.Don't use drugs, wear your seat belt, and stay away from negative influences when riding in a car.
Step 11: Stay up to date with current events.
You can find current issues and events in the newspaper and legitimate online sources.Don't depend on your social media feed for information. If you want to stay up to date on what is happening in the world, you need to seek out other sources of news.Discuss current events with your parents or other adults when you learn about them. You might ask, "What do you think about the president's new bill, Dad?"You can check out a few academic journals from the library if you read the newspaper in the morning.
Step 12: Don't forget to read books.
It's a great hobby to read a book about real-world facts or make-up stories.New words are added to your vocabulary when you read a book. This will help you improve your writing skills.Reading can help relieve stress. For school, there are reading assignments.Choose books that relate to your interests, such as airplanes or ancient Egypt, to enjoy the habit of reading.
Step 13: Critical thinking skills can be used.
Critical thinking skills can be used to solve a problem. You can either jump at the fastest answer that comes to mind, or you can spend more time looking at all angles of the problem.Being a critical thinker can help you better judge the consequences of your actions, evaluate the validity of information, and learn to think outside the box.Critical thinking skills can be built by playing board games. You can schedule a game night with your family or friends.Good board game options include Apples and Scattergories.
Step 14: Talk clearly.
Many adolescents and teens communicate in a way that leaves teachers and parents scratching their heads. You should speak in a way that others understand if you want to be viewed as mature.Don't use abbreviations or shorthand.Correct spelling is required when writing in complete sentences. If you want to learn how to engage in conversation with others, ask your parents to role-play.
Step 15: Active listening can be used.
Teens don't want to listen to others because they assume they know everything.Knowing that you can learn from everyone is a sign of maturity.Try to pay more attention to what you're saying. It's a good rule to listen to understand rather than reply.Try to understand what the other person is saying.Don't rush to get your message across.Completely hear them out.You should try to summarize what they said.Your mom is concerned about leaving you at home alone because she will be out of town this weekend.I think you should stay with the Woodards.I agree. If Pat's parents don't mind me staying over, I will.
Step 16: Slang or swear words should not be used.
Slang and other popular terms can be used in the presence of peers.Try to use words in their proper form when communicating with adults.Don't try to talk over adults heads with terms they're not familiar with.Swearing words is a sign of disrespect.
