Batter board instructions for do-it-yourselfers, how to lay out a deck, and setting batter boards are some of the topics covered in this first part of How to build Batter Boards.
Batter boards are used to mark the framework during initial excavation.Batter boards make sure the foundation walls are at the right angles.Your house is not level if they aren't squared and level. You can learn how to make your own batter boards in preparation for future projects.
You will be using the building plans to put up your batter boards, so make sure they are easily accessible.Your pegs are used as guides for building your batter boards, and once the foundation is made, they will be ignored.Any building material can be used to make your pegs.
Place your first peg in a corner of the structure according to the building plans.Measure the distance from the first corner to the second corner and install it.Measure from the second pegged corner to where the third peg should go and add it.Place the final peg multiple times.
Measure from corner to corner and repeat for the other two corners with a 100 foot measuring tape. The two measurements should be the same. You will need to revisit the building plans if they are not.
You will need 12 stakes. Each corner requires two stakes in addition to the pegs, so measure out four feet from the first corner stake and hammer another into the ground.Place the other two stakes eight feet from this one.For the last three corners, repeat. You will be marking and leveling the cross boards later if you don't worry about whether or not you drive the stakes equally.
