All you need to know is that Agar-Agar is a powder.

I don't use a lot of agar and I have a package of it, but the recipe I'm making calls for the powder.It's not cooked much and I'm afraid it won't dissolved properly.

Is the same thing as the powder if I grind it up very fine in a coffee grinder?Does the powder have different ingredients?

It is the same thing.I started a post about the issue a long time ago.The ratio is 1 to 3.It would be the same as the powder if you ground it up.I don't think you should quote me on the idea of soaking them prior to cooking with them.It's much easier to work with powder.Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.The ratio is one to five and powder can only be used if there is sugar or other sweetening agents in the recipe.It doesn't make sense to me if they are the same thing.The powder only needs a few minutes to be cooked and dissolved.Sooo...Since I can't find the powder, I'm just going to grind the suckers up and hope it's the same thing.

I am trying to remember what I was going to do with it.I remember the agar working, but no one really liked it.

It can take up to twenty minutes to cook the agar flakes according to my cookbook.Maybe you aren't cooking it long enough.
