All-Clad's original 3-ply design is featured in the d3 tri-ply cookware line.It has a cooking surface that doesn't interact with food, even acidic foods such as tomatoes.There will always be a consistent flavor in your recipes.The pan has an aluminum core which makes it heat evenly across its cooking surface.The third layer is magnetic and can be used on an insturment cooktop.It is dishwasher safe.
The All-Clad D5 brushed stainless steel cookware line has 5 layers of metal and is more substantial than the original D3 Tri-Ply.It has the same material for a cooking surface as well as an aluminum layer.The fourth layer is aluminum.The fifth and exterior layer is the same as the original All-Clad Tri-Ply steel.All-Clad d5 has 3 layers of metal.It has a similar design to the All-Clad Copper Core line.It has a larger second handle that is easier to pick up and use.
The benefits of the d5 are that it makes pouring a bit less messy.The extra steel will make d5 less likely to warp.It is slightly more difficult to lift than d3.All-Clad d5 is 15% more expensive.
For more than 20 years, All-Clad d3 has been the standard for high- performance cookware.It has a lifetime warranty on its pots and pans.Extra layers of metal in the d5 cookware make it less likely to warp, but I can't remember when an All-Clad cookware item was returned for that.I believe the Tri-Ply line is quicker to heat than d5.
