Alexander was a motivational speaker and insurance salesman who attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.They met at a conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2006 while living in Arizona and Palm Desert, California.They were married the next year.At the end of June 2007, the two had separated but still had a sexual relationship.

Alexander was found dead in the bathtub.He had been shot in the head and had his throat cut.There have been conflicting reports about the number of stab wounds, with some saying 29 and others saying 27 after the trial.Alexander's jugular vein, common carotid arteries, and windpipe had been diminished according to the medical examiner.Alexander had wounds on his hands.Horn testified that Alexander may have been dead at the time of the gunshot, which was condemned as a crime.

The request to review the motion to disqualify the District Attorney's Office was rejected.On May 18, the court ordered Arias to take the IQ and competency exams.The defense tried to get text messages and e-mails.The trial began at the Supreme Court.On December 10, 2012 the jurors were screened.The indictment excluded women and African-Americans according to defense counsel.
