The Greek Frappé is thought to have been invented in 1957 at the annual Thessaloniki International Fair, when a sales representative for Nestle discovered there was no hot water and needed to find an alternative way to serve instant coffee. The foamy and refreshing drink has become very popular in Greece during the warmer months. There are several variations of the drink, and these instructions will show you how to make a traditional one.
Step 1: The coffee should be measured.
Put two to three cups of coffee into a container.Nescafe Classic is used in most of the recipes for the drink. The Greek version of Nescafe Classic is said to produce the best foam.
Step 2: Add some sugar.
You can add any amount of sugar, from one to four, or none at all.One with a moderate amount of sugar is referred to as "metrio" and one that is very sweet is called "glyko" in Greece.
Step 3: Put water in it.
Next, add some water. Some recipes call for as little as two to three quarts of water, while others recommend as much as 3 quarts. You may have to experiment to get it right.Coffee and sugar need to be covered with water, but too much water will decrease the foaminess of the drink.
Step 4: If you want, add ice.
If you want, add two ice cubes to the shaker. The water should not be chilled, according to some recipes, while others suggest adding a couple of ice cubes. You may want to experiment with this to get the consistency you want.
Step 5: Do something to shake it up.
Shake aggressively and quickly to create a thick, creamy foam.Shake the coffee for at least 15 seconds. Many recipes call for a shake of 30 seconds or more. You can mix up the coffee with an immersion blender. For ease and quality, some prefer this shaking.
Step 6: Coffee can be poured into a glass.
Put the contents in a tall glass.
Step 7: Add some ice.
If you fill the glass with ice cubes, it will fill up half to two-thirds of the way. Some recipes suggest a smaller amount of ice.You can experiment with the amount that's right for you.
Step 8: Milk can be added if desired.
Some people like milk while others don't.If you want milk in your drink, you can either add chilled milk or evaporated milk. When ordering a drink with milk in Greece, it's called "me gala."
Step 9: Add some water.
To fill the glass, add cold water.Different recipes call for different amounts, with some calling for as little as two ounces and others as much as eight.Try to find the amount that you like best.
Step 10: Put a straw in the Stir.
Always serve with a straw, as the drink will need to be stirred periodically during consumption to combine the froth with the liquid. If you stir too much, you will break up the froth.
